காவியத் தலைவன் – திரை விமர்சனம்

இருபதாம் நூற்றாண்டின் ஆரம்பம், நாடக சபாக்கள் பாய்ஸ் கம்பெனிகளாகவும், குருகுல வாசமாக நடிகர்கள்  இருந்து, பயின்ற காலத்தில் நடக்கிறது கதை. மேலும் சுதந்திரப் போராட்டம் நடக்கும் காலமாகவும் உள்ளதால் கதையில் அதுவும் முக்கிய இடம் வகிக்கிறது.

நாடக நடிகர்களாக சித்தார்த்தும், பிருதிவிராஜூம், குருவாக நாசரும், வாத்தியாக தம்பி ராமையாவும் ரொம்ப நன்றாகப் பரிமளிக்கிறார்கள். பொன் வண்ணனுக்கு மிகச் சிறிய பாத்திரம். மிகவும் அழகாக உள்ள வேதிகா அதே நாடகக் கம்பெனியில் வளரும் ஒரு நடிகையாக (கே.பி.சுந்தராம்பாளின் உண்மை வாழ்வின் நிழல் பாத்திரமாக) கச்சிதமாகப் பொருந்துகிறார்.

வாங்க மக்கா வாங்க என்று intro பாடலுடனும், நாடகக் கம்பெனியில் நடக்கும் விஷயங்கள் வைத்தும், சங்கரதாஸ் சுவாமிகள் எழுதிய பல நாடகங்களில் இருந்து குட்டிக் குட்டியாகப் பல சீன்களைப் போட்டும், காதல், சூழ்ச்சி என்று முதல் பாதியில் நம்மை கதையில் லயிக்க வைத்துள்ளார் வசந்த பாலன்.

செட் டிசைனருக்கும், உடை அலங்கார நிபுணருக்கும், தனித் தனியாக ஒரு பூங்கொத்து! செட் டிசைனர் T.சந்தானம். அப்படியே அந்தக் காலத்துக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்று விடுகிறார். ஒளிப்பதிவாளராக நிரவ் ஷா முதல் பரிசை தட்டிச் செல்கிறார்.  வண்ணங்களை சரியாகத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்து அற்புதமாகப் படத்தை உருவாக்கியுள்ளார். அதே போல நடன இயக்குநருக்கும் பாராட்டுகள்! அந்தக் கால நடன அசைவுகள் எல்லாம் கண்ணுக்குக் குளுமை.

இடைவேளைக்குப் பிறகு இயக்குநருக்குக் கதையை நகர்த்தத் தெரியவில்லை. அங்கே இங்கே என்று தடுமாறி, சுதந்திரப் போராட்டத்தை உள்ளே நுழைத்து, அதிலும் சுவாரசியமாக எதுவும் சொல்லாததால் சஸ்பென்ஸ் எதுவும் இன்றி தொய்கிறது கதை.

ஜெயமோகன் வசனம். அவர் பாதிப்புப் பெரிதாக இல்லை. அவ்வை சண்முகம் பற்றிய சுயசரிதையை வசந்தபாலனிடம் ஜெயமோகன் கொடுத்துப் படிக்கச் செய்தது தான் இந்தப் படம் தொடங்குவதற்கு ஆரம்பம். அதற்கு மட்டுமே அவர் credit எடுத்துக் கொள்ளலாம்.

மதுரை என்று காட்டப்படும் ஊர் தேவகோட்டை/செட்டிநாடு. ஏன்? வசந்தபாலன்? ஏன்? செட்டிநாட்டு வீடுகள் தனித் தன்மை கொண்டவை. அவை பல படங்களில் (எல்லா படங்களிலும் அதே வீடு வேற) வந்து நமக்கு மனப்பாடமும் ஆகிவிட்டது. அதை ஏன் மதுரை என்று காட்டவேண்டும்?

பாடல்கள் வெளியீட்டின் போதே ரசிகர்கள் மத்தியில் நல்ல வரவேற்பைப் பெற்றன. யாருமில்லா தனியிரங்கில் மிகவும் இனிமையாக உள்ளது. ஆண் பாத்திரங்களுக்கான அனைத்துப் பாடல்களையும் ஹரி சரண் மட்டுமே பாடியுள்ளார். சிறப்பான சாதனை!

படத்தில் பங்குபெற்றவர்கள் அனைவரும் மிகவும் கடுமையாக உழைத்திருக்கிறார்கள். எனக்கு சித்தார்த்தை இந்தப் படத்தில் மிகவும் பிடித்திருந்தது. ப்ரிதிவிராஜூன் நடிப்பிலும் குறை சொல்ல முடியாது. படம் நன்றாக இல்லை என்று ஒரு வரியில் நாம் சொல்லிவிட்டுக் கடந்து செல்வது நல்லது இல்லை தான். ஆனாலும் எதிர்ப்பார்த்த திருப்பங்களும், உப்பு சப்பில்லாத திரைக் கதையும் இருந்தால் என்ன சொல்வதென்றே தெரியவில்லை.

 

Seven – Review of a play about seven courageous women

Went for a play today named “Seven” at Rani Seethai Hall. This was in honour of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence. The aim of this project is to throw spotlight on existing issues of violence and affirm activists attempts to eliminate Gender Based Violence (GBV) in various parts of the world. The programme was a monologue of seven ordinary yet courageous women. The play Seven was created by seven award winning playwrights which talks about seven women activists who hail from Afghanistan, Cambodia, Guatemala, Nigeria, Northern Ireland, Pakistan and Russia.

We can see the magnanimity of their struggle and their stupendous achievements inspite of all odds by watching this play.

Marina Piskalakova-Parker, Russia founded the first hotline for victims of domestic violence which has grown into a big counselling service for Russian women. This story has been written by Paula Cizmar of USC, California.

Mu Sochua, Cambodia is the former minister of Women’s Affairs in Cambodia. She was co nominated for Nobel Peace Prize for her work against sex trafficking of women in Cambodia and neighbouring Thailand. MP Mu Sochua, after door to door visits to 428 villages, won a seat in the Parliamnet in July 2008 and was re elected in 2013. Catherine Filloux who wrote this piece has been writing about human rights and social justice for the past twenty years.

Annabelle De Leon, Guatemala, raised herself and her family out of poverty by getting an education. She has been a congresswoman since 1995 and has received death threats because of her fight against corruption and for the rights of the poor, particularly the women. The playwright is Gail Kriegel.

Inez McCormack, Northern Ireland (deceased in 2013) was an internationally renowned and hugely influential human rights and trade union activist. She was an advocate for equal rights and fair labour practices for women and minorities. Carol K.Mack is the playwright.

Farida Azizi, Afghanistan became an activist fighting the marginalization of women under Taliban rule in her native country. Because of threats to her life she has sought asylum and now lives in the US with her two children. She works on Women’s rights and peace building in Afghanistan. The playwright is Ruth Margraff.

Hafsat Abiola, Nigeria is an advocate for human rights and democracy following the murder of her activist parents. She founded the Kudirat Initiative for Democracy, which provides skills training and leadership opportunities for young women across Nigeria. Anna Deveare Smith is the playwright based on interviews with the activist.

Mukhtar Mai, Pakistan, was gang raped by four men and forced to walk home almost naked in retribution for an alleged honour crime. Instead of taking the traditional women’s route of committing suicide, she brought her rapists to justice, built schools to improve the condition of women and became an advocate for education in her country. Susan Yankowitz is the playwright of this moving tale.

Those who played the various female characters today were V.Padma a lecturer from Stella Maris, Sunil Vishnu from Evam, Saundarya Rajesh founder of AVTAR Career Creators, Salma a renowned poet and author in Tamil literature, Sampath Muthuvelan a core member of Nalamdana, Anwar Basha a budding entrepreneur, Swapna Nair a national award winning secondary grade teacher.

Each one of them emoted the characters beautifully. The story of each of the seven characters and their journey is very very painful. The audience is able to feel the pain as we sit through and listen to the various stories of strife and struggle as they unfold in front of us through these artistes.

I was very impressed with the director Sanjay Kumar’s presentation skills. He narrated the story all together instead of one by one and with not one bit of confusion. It made the programme interesting and made the audience attentive. The use of Tamil in narrating the story by a few of the characters was again a good directorial touch.

Each performer was equally good and I cannot say if one was better than the other and again the credit goes to the director for this. There was a lively discussion between the audience and the actors/director/and Anuradha Marwah a novelist and playwright who was the coordinator. The Consul general of The US Embassy was the chief guest.

The play will again be performed on Saturday Nov 22nd at Olcott Kuppam, Besant Nagar at 4.30pm. Please don’t miss it.

Interstellar – திரை விமர்சனம்

Interstellar என்றால் நட்சத்திரங்களுக்கு இடையே நடப்பது அல்லது இருப்பது என்று பொருள். நட்சத்திரங்களிடையே ஒரு மனிதன் வாழக் கூடிய கிரகத்தைத் தேடிப் போகும் சம்பவமே படத்தின் கதையானதால் கதையின் பெயர் அதுவே.

இது ஒரு science fiction படம். நான் இந்த மாதிரி futuristic science fiction படங்களின் பெரிய ரசிகை கிடையாது. ஆனால் இந்தப் படத்தின் கதை அம்சம் என்னை வெகுவாக ஈர்த்தது. ஸ்டார் வார்ஸ் போன்ற படங்களைப் பார்த்துள்ளேன். பெரிதாக ரசித்ததில்லை. ஆனால் இந்தப் படத்தை பார்க்கும்போது பல சமயங்கள் சீட்டின் நுணியில் உட்கார்ந்தும் கண்ணில் வந்தக் கண்ணீரை துடைத்துக் கொண்டும் மிகவும் லயித்துப் பார்த்தேன். பெரிய படம். 2மணி 5௦ நிமிடங்கள். ஆங்கில சப்டைட்டில் உள்ளது. மிகவும் பிரம்மாண்டமானப் படம்.

இன்றே நம் கண் எதிரே கனிம வளங்கள் சூறையாடப் படுவதையும், தண்ணீருக்காக அல்லாடுவதையும், விவசாய நிலங்கள் தரிசு நிலங்களாக ரசாயன உரத்தினாலும் மற்ற விஷ விதைகளாலும் பாழ்பட்டு வருவதையும் கண்கூடாகப் பார்க்கிறோம். நம் சுயநலத்தால் நாளை நம் சந்ததியனருக்கு எந்த மாதிரி உலகத்தை நாம் விட்டுச் செல்லப் போகிறோம் என்று சிந்தித்துக் கூட பார்ப்பதில்லை.

அப்படி ஒரு விவசாயம் பொய்த்து அமெரிக்காவில் மக்கள் திண்டாடும் ஒரு வேளையில் நடக்கும் சம்பவங்களே கதையின் கரு. மாற்று உலகைத் தேட நாசா ஒரு குழுவை தேர்ந்தெடுத்து வேற்று கிரகத்திற்கு அனுப்புகிறது. அதற்கு முன்னேயும் ஒரு குழு சென்று அவர்களின் நிலை என்று சரியாகத் தெரியாமல் இருக்கிறது.

ஸ்பேஸ் க்ராப்டின் உள் பக்க வெளி பக்கத் தோற்றம், அது பயணிக்கும் பாதை, முதலில் இறங்கும் ஒரு நீர் நிலை, பின் செல்லும் ப்ளாக் ஹோல், அதன் பின் இறங்கும் ஒரு பொட்டல் காடான ஒரு குளிர் கிரகம் என்று ஒவ்வொரு ஸ்பாட்டும் வெகு நேர்த்தியான visual effectsஉடன் பிரம்மாண்டமாகவும் அதே சமயம் நுணுக்கமாக கவனத்துடன் தயாரிக்கப் பட்டு படம் பிடிக்கப் பட்டுள்ளது.

ஒரு குடும்பத் தலைவனாகவும் வேற்று கிரகத்தைத் தேடிச் செல்லும் குழுத் தலைவனாகவும் Matthew McConaughey பிராமதமாக நடித்துள்ளார். அவரின் தந்தை பாசம், அறிவியல் ஆர்வம், முக்கியமாக எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் மேலான ஒரு சக்தி நமக்கு உதவுகிறது என்பது புரிந்து அதன் பின் அவர் எடுக்கும் நடவடிக்கைகள் என்று கதை முழுதும் அவரே கோலொச்சுகிறார்.

இந்தக் கதையில் முக்கியமாகப் புரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டியது wormhole என்பதைப் பற்றியது. இதற்கு இன்னொரு பெயர் Einstein-Rosen bridge என்பதாகும். இது ஸ்பேசில் நேரத்தை சேமிக்கும் ஒரு குறுக்கு வழி என்று கொள்ளலாம். ஒரு tunnelஐ நினைத்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள். டன்னலின் ஒரு பக்கம் ஒரு நேரம், இன்னொரு முடிவில் வேறொரு நேரம். அது இந்தக் கதையைப் புரிந்து கொள்ள தேவையான ஒரு புது விஷயம்.

இதைத் தவிர பூமிக்கும் ஸ்பேசில் இருக்கும் கிரகங்களுக்கும் புவி ஈர்ப்பு சக்தியில் (gravity) மட்டும் மாற்றம் இல்லை, நேரத்தைக் கணக்கிடுவதிலும் மாற்றம் உள்ளது என்பதும் இப்படத்தின் அடித்தளம் ஆகிறது. எப்படி தேவர்களின் ஒரு நாள் நமக்கு ஒரு வருடம் என்று சொல்லக் கேட்டிருக்கிறோமோ அதே மாதிரி அந்தத் தத்துவத்தை இங்கே அறிவியல் பூர்வமாக இந்தக் கதையில் பயன்படுத்துகிறார்கள். ஒரு கிரகத்தைக் கண்டுபிடித்து அங்கே தங்கும் இரண்டு மணி நேரம் கூட பூமி நேரத்தில் பல வருடங்களாகக் கணக்காகிறது.

மேலும் நாம் அன்பு செலுத்துபவரிடம் நம்மால் அமானுஷியமாக தொடர்பு கொண்டு எண்ணங்களை பரிமாறிக் கொள்ள முடியும் என்று கிழக்கு நாடுகளின் சித்தாந்த்தையைம் இந்தக் கதை கையாள்கிறது. {அதனால் தான் இந்தப் படம் எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்ததோ என்னவோ 🙂 }

இந்த மாதிரி ஒரு கதையை visualise பண்ணி அதை செயல் வடிவாக்கம் செய்துள்ள கிறிஸ்டபர் நோலனின் திறனை கண்டு பிரமித்து நிற்கிறேன். இதில் படத்தின் பின் பகுதியில் physics வைத்துப் பல விளக்கங்கள் வருகின்றன. எனக்கு அவை துல்லியமாகப் புரியாவிட்டாலும் குத்து மதிப்பாகப் புரிந்து கொண்டேன்.

இசை Hans Zimmer. மிகவும் அற்புதம். படத்தோடு ஒன்றியுள்ளது இசை. விண்கலத்தில் வரும் ஓசைகளும் விண்வெளியில் பயணிக்கும் போது எழும் சத்தங்களும் நம்மை அந்த இடத்துக்கேக் கொண்டு சென்று விடுகிறது. Special effectsக்கும் மற்ற ஆராய்ச்சிகளுக்கும் எவ்வளவு நேரமும் பணமும் செலவழித்திருப்பார்கள் என்று தெரியவில்லை.

வார நாள் மதிய ஆட்டத்திற்கு சாந்தம் திரை அரங்கம் நிறைந்திருந்தது. கிறிஸ்டபர் நோலனின் பெயர் திரையில் வந்த போதும் படம் முடிந்த பிறகும், அரங்கில் இருந்த அனைவரும் கை தட்டி பாராட்டைத் தெரிவித்தது மகிழ்ச்சியாக இருந்தது 🙂 #TheKnowledgeableChennaiCrowd
